It’s no secret that weddings can be expensive, with the average wedding costing an estimated £31,974. One way to reduce that price is to bring some of the elements ‘in-house’ and make them by hand. From place names to table decor, there’s so much you can make.
Of course, some wedding crafts are easier to carry out yourself than others. Floristry or cake making, for example, require skill and training but creating your own invitations is something you can do through trial and error.
You don’t have to design the whole invitation though; here we’ve taken a look at what you can do to simply enhance your invites – using different materials, textures, colours and designs that can make a huge difference and add a personal twist.
Tied together with a bow
If you chose not to design the whole invitation, a bow makes for a simple but elegant finishing touch. Use the bow to tie the invitation package together; wedding details, hotel recommendations and RSVP card. Choose a colour that ties in with your wedding and texture to suit the theme.
For a rustic themed wedding, for example, you could choose twine and for an added extra, add a flower, such as a sprig of lavender inside the knot of the bow. For something a little more elegant try velvet or silk.
Calligraphy
Some people may need a little more practice at this than others, but handwritten calligraphy can be a lovely touch to add to your wedding invitations when writing out addresses on envelopes or adding names. If you’re going for an elegant and sophisticated theme for your wedding, this is the perfect DIY invitation. Don’t just pick up any old calligraphy set though, look for a quality set from a specialist crafts store that will produce stunning lettering every time.
Wax seal
Another little extra touch you can easily do yourself is to add a wax seal to the envelope. This is the perfect option for those couples who want to add their own personal touch to their invitations. Consider having a personalised monogram made and stamp this onto some metallic wax. A wax seal on your envelopes will create a real regal look and adds a decorative design to the envelopes – just be careful with how much wax you add as this could affect the weight of the envelope and increase the price of postage.
Watercolour
Adding a streak of watercolour or having the whole invite painted with watercolour is easy to do as there is no right or wrong way to achieve your desired effect. This means couples can easily achieve an end product that suits their personalities and that can be made on a smaller budget. Choose pastel-hued colours that match your colour scheme, you could then splash the paint across key information to make it pop.
Lace it up
Lace is a signature wedding material; it’s regularly found on the bride’s dress and is a symbol of the special day. Adding a piece of lace to your invitations is an elegant touch that suits both grand, stately-home weddings and rustic, boho-chic outdoor weddings. Add flowers or gems for some additional glamour and to give guests a taste of what they can expect from your wedding.
DIY wedding crafts are a fantastic way of adding little personal touches to your special day and saving some money. Your crafts don’t have to be big, dramatic projects – the smallest of details it can make all of the difference.
